Treatment of growth failure in children due to growth hormone deficiency, Turner syndrome, chronic renal insufficiency, Prader-Willi syndrome, and other conditions resulting in short stature where growth hormone therapy is indicated.
Somatrem is identical in structure to human pituitary-derived growth hormone. It binds to growth hormone receptors in target tissues, stimulating insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) production, which promotes linear bone growth, protein synthesis, and cell proliferation.
Should be used under specialist supervision with regular monitoring of growth response, thyroid function, and glucose levels. Contraindicated in patients with active malignancy, diabetic retinopathy, or closed epiphyses. Administered via subcutaneous injection. Treatment is typically long-term and discontinued once growth potential is exhausted.
