Somavert is indicated for the treatment of acromegaly in patients who have had an inadequate response to surgery, radiation therapy, and/or other medications such as somatostatin analogs.

Somavert (pegvisomant) is a genetically engineered growth hormone analog that acts as a competitive antagonist at growth hormone receptors. By binding to these receptors, it blocks the action of endogenous growth hormone, thereby reducing IGF-1 production and alleviating symptoms of acromegaly.

Somavert is administered as a daily subcutaneous injection. Liver function should be monitored regularly as elevated liver enzymes may occur. Common side effects include injection site reactions, headache, and elevated blood sugar levels. Patients should have IGF-1 levels monitored to ensure adequate dosing.
