Spevigo is indicated for the treatment of generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) flares in adults. It is not used for plaque psoriasis or routine management but specifically for acute flare episodes.
Spevigo contains spesolimab, a monoclonal antibody that blocks the interleukin-36 (IL-36) receptor. This receptor is involved in the inflammatory cascade that causes GPP, and by inhibiting it, the medication reduces the excessive immune response that leads to pustule formation and systemic inflammation.
Spevigo is administered as a single intravenous infusion under medical supervision. Common side effects may include fatigue, nausea, and headache. Patients should be monitored for infections during treatment, as immunosuppressants may increase susceptibility. It is contraindicated in patients with severe active infections. A single dose may be given for a flare, with additional doses based on physician assessment.
