Spherusol
Spherusol is a brand-name diagnostic skin test antigen used to detect delayed-type hypersensitivity to coccidioidomycosis, commonly known as Valley fever. Spherusol is used as a diagnostic tool for detecting coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever) in individuals who may have been exposed to Coccidioides immitis or Coccidioides posadasii fungi. It helps identify delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions associated with this fungal infection.
Spherusol contains spherule-derived coccidioidin, which is injected into the skin (typically on the forearm). If the patient has been previously exposed to the Coccidioides fungus, their immune system will recognize the antigen and produce a localized delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction at the injection site within 24-48 hours.
A positive reaction indicates previous exposure to Coccidioides but does not confirm active infection. A negative result may occur in early infection, disseminated disease, or in immunocompromised patients. This is a diagnostic tool only and should be interpreted alongside clinical symptoms and other laboratory findings. As a brand-name product, availability may be limited.
