Steglatro is indicated for improving glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise and may be prescribed alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medications such as metformin, insulin, or other oral agents.

Steglatro belongs to the SGLT2 (sodium-glucose cotransporter-2) inhibitor class. It works by blocking the SGLT2 protein in the kidneys, which is responsible for reabsorbing glucose back into the bloodstream. By inhibiting this process, Steglatro causes excess glucose to be filtered out of the blood and excreted through urine, thereby lowering blood glucose levels.

Steglatro is not indicated for use in patients with type 1 diabetes or those with diabetic ketoacidosis. Common side effects may include genital yeast infections, urinary tract infections, and increased urination. Rare but serious risks include ketoacidosis and necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum (Fournier's gangrene). Patients should be monitored for kidney function during treatment, and adequate hydration is recommended. Steglatro may cause hypotension, especially in patients taking diuretics or with renal impairment.
