Stiripentol is indicated as adjunctive therapy for the treatment of seizures associated with Dravet syndrome in patients taking clobazam. It is not approved for use as monotherapy.

The exact mechanism is unknown; however, it is thought to work through direct effects on GABA-A receptors, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission, and through indirect effects by inhibiting cytochrome P450 enzymes, which may increase levels of other anticonvulsant medications.

Common side effects include drowsiness, decreased appetite, weight loss, nausea, and behavioral changes. Due to CYP450 inhibition, it has significant drug interactions with many other medications. Regular monitoring of weight and blood counts may be required. Use during pregnancy should be carefully considered only if the benefit justifies the risk to the fetus.
