Streptococcus Pneumoniae Serotype 14 Conjugate Vaccine

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: August 30, 2026

This is a monovalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine that provides protection against Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 14. It works by linking the capsular polysaccharide antigen to a diphtheria CRM197 carrier protein to enhance immune response, particularly in young children. This vaccine is used to prevent invasive pneumococcal diseases such as meningitis, bacteremia, and pneumonia caused by serotype 14.

Prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease (including bacteremia, meningitis, and pneumonia) and otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 14. Similar to other pneumococcal conjugate vaccines, it may be used as part of pediatric immunization programs or in at-risk populations.

The vaccine contains the capsular polysaccharide from S. pneumoniae serotype 14, which is conjugated (chemically linked) to the CRM197 protein, a nontoxic mutant of diphtheria toxin. This conjugation converts the T-cell independent polysaccharide antigen into a T-cell dependent antigen, enhancing immunogenicity and enabling effective immune responses in young children who typically respond poorly to polysaccharide antigens alone.

Like all vaccines, contraindications include known hypersensitivity to any vaccine component. Adverse reactions may include injection site reactions, fever, and irritability. The CRM197 carrier protein may enhance immune response to co-administered vaccines. Efficacy depends on the individual's ability to mount an immune response. As with all pneumococcal vaccines, serotype 14 coverage may vary and does not protect against non-vaccine serotypes.
