Streptococcus Pneumoniae Serotype 6B Conjugate Vaccine

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: August 30, 2026

This is a monovalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine targeting Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 6b. The vaccine works by linking the capsular polysaccharide antigen to a diphtheria CRM197 protein carrier, which enhances immune response particularly in young children who typically have poor responses to polysaccharide antigens alone. It is used for active immunization to prevent invasive pneumococcal disease caused by serotype 6b.

Quick summary

A conjugate vaccine providing targeted protection against invasive pneumococcal disease from S. pneumoniae serotype 6b by linking polysaccharide antigen to a diphtheria protein carrier.

Prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease (including bacteremia, meningitis, and pneumonia) caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 6b. May be used in infants, young children, and high-risk populations who are susceptible to this specific pneumococcal serotype.

This conjugate vaccine combines the capsular polysaccharide antigen from S. pneumoniae serotype 6b with the nontoxic diphtheria CRM197 protein carrier. This conjugation converts a T-cell independent response into a T-cell dependent response, leading to improved immunogenicity, memory B-cell formation, and protective antibody production, particularly in young children.

Common adverse effects include injection site reactions (redness, swelling, pain), fever, and irritability in children. Contraindicated in individuals with severe hypersensitivity to any vaccine component. Like other pneumococcal vaccines, it does not protect against serotypes not included in the formulation or against non-pneumococcal pathogens. Healthcare providers should monitor for allergic reactions, especially in individuals with history of hypersensitivity to diphtheria toxoid or CRM197 protein.
