Prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease, pneumonia, meningitis, bacteremia, and otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 11a. Used as a component in polyvalent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccines for adults and children per age-appropriate vaccination schedules.

The capsular polysaccharide antigen stimulates B-cell mediated immune response without T-cell dependence, inducing serotype-specific IgG antibodies that opsonize and facilitate clearance of S. pneumoniae type 11a bacteria.

This antigen is one component of a multivalent vaccine; protection is limited to included serotypes only. Not a substitute for antibiotic treatment of active infection. Contraindications include severe hypersensitivity to any vaccine component. Immunocompromised individuals may have reduced response.
