Used as a component in pneumococcal polysaccharide or conjugate vaccines for prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease, pneumonia, and otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 8. Particularly relevant for adults over 65, young children, and individuals with immunocompromising conditions.

The capsular polysaccharide antigen stimulates the immune system to produce type-specific antibodies that recognize and neutralize Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria expressing the type 8 capsule. When included in conjugate vaccines, the polysaccharide is conjugated to a carrier protein to enhance immunogenicity, particularly in young children.

This is a vaccine antigen component, not a standalone medication. Should not be administered to individuals with known hypersensitivity to vaccine components. May cause local injection site reactions or mild systemic symptoms. Vaccination schedules and eligibility should follow current public health guidelines. Type 8 is included in both PPSV23 and PCV13/PCV15/PCV20 vaccines.
