Stromectol (ivermectin) is an antiparasitic medication used to treat infections caused by parasites including strongyloidiasis, onchocerciasis, and other roundworm infections. Stromectol is used to treat strongyloidiasis (intestinal threadworm infection), onchocerciasis (river blindness), and other parasitic infections caused by roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. It may also be used off-label for scabies and lice infestations in certain cases.

Ivermectin binds to glutamate-gated chloride channels in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells, increasing cell membrane permeability to chloride ions. This causes hyperpolarization of the cell membrane, leading to paralysis and death of susceptible parasites.

Stromectol is generally well-tolerated when used for approved indications at recommended doses. Common side effects may include dizziness, nausea, and skin rash. It should not be used in pregnant women or in children weighing less than 15 kg. Patients with loiasis or onchocerciasis should be monitored for rare but serious neurological adverse reactions.
