Sulfacetamide is primarily used to treat acne vulgaris (common acne) and may also be used for rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis. It is most effective against inflammatory acne lesions such as papules and pustules.

As a sulfonamide antibiotic, sulfacetamide works by inhibiting bacterial folic acid synthesis, which prevents the growth of susceptible bacteria. It also has mild anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce redness and swelling associated with acne lesions.

Sulfa allergy sufferers should avoid this medication. Apply only to affected areas and avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Common side effects include skin dryness, irritation, and peeling. May cause photosensitivity, so sun exposure should be limited. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed.
