Sulfadimethoxine is a competitive antagonist of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), inhibiting bacterial dihydropteroate synthetase. This blocks folic acid synthesis, preventing bacterial DNA replication and growth.
Contraindicated in patients with sulfonamide hypersensitivity, severe renal impairment, or during late pregnancy. May cause crystalluria, blood dyscrasias, or photosensitivity. Adequate fluid intake is recommended. Cross-reactivity with other sulfonamides may occur.
