Topically for minor skin infections, burns, and wound care. Historically also used systemically for urinary tract infections and other susceptible bacterial infections, though oral use is now uncommon.

Sulfathiazole is a competitive inhibitor of bacterial dihydropteroate synthase, blocking the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid and subsequently impairing bacterial DNA synthesis and replication.

May cause hypersensitivity reactions, including skin rashes and blood disorders. Use with caution in patients with sulfa allergies, renal impairment, or porphyria. Generally contraindicated in late pregnancy due to risk of kernicterus in newborns. Effectiveness may be reduced in patients with impaired renal function.
