Treatment and prevention of chronic gout, including tophaceous gout, as well as management of hyperuricemia. May also be used for secondary hyperuricemia associated with conditions such as polycythemia vera.
As a uricosuric agent, sulfinpyrazone inhibits the reabsorption of uric acid in the proximal renal tubule, increasing urinary excretion of uric acid and thereby reducing serum uric acid levels.
Requires adequate fluid intake (at least 2 liters daily) to minimize risk of uric acid kidney stones. Should not be initiated during acute gout attacks. May cause gastrointestinal irritation and can interact with other drugs affecting uric acid excretion. Contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment, peptic ulcers, or history of blood dyscrasias.
