Suprelorin is indicated for chemical castration in sexually mature male dogs and for the management of adrenal gland disease in ferrets. It may also be used in other species for reproductive suppression.
Suprelorin contains deslorelin, a GnRH agonist. After implantation, it initially stimulates the pituitary gland, then causes down-regulation of GnRH receptors, leading to decreased secretion of LH and FSH. This results in reduced testosterone production and temporary suppression of reproductive function.
Suprelorin is for veterinary use only. The implant is placed subcutaneously by a veterinarian. Effects are reversible, with fertility typically returning after the implant dissolves or is removed. Some dogs may experience initial worsening of behavior before improvement. The duration of effect varies by formulation (4 or 12 months). Side effects may include mild swelling at the implant site, lethargy, or changes in appetite.
