Survanta is used for the prevention and treatment of Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS), also known as hyaline membrane disease, in premature infants weighing less than 1250 grams or those showing signs of RDS.
Survanta replaces deficient natural lung surfactant, reducing alveolar surface tension to prevent collapse during exhalation. This allows the alveoli to remain open, improving gas exchange and lung compliance in premature infants.
Survanta is administered directly into the trachea by trained healthcare professionals in a hospital setting. It may cause side effects such as oxygen desaturation, bradycardia, or endotracheal tube blockage during administration. Close monitoring of vital signs is required. Survanta is not interchangeable with other surfactant products.
