Symfi is indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in treatment-naive adults and children weighing at least 40 kg. It is used as a complete regimen and is not recommended for patients with moderate to severe kidney impairment.
Symfi contains three antiretroviral agents: efavirenz (a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor), lamivudine (a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor), and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor). Together, they inhibit reverse transcriptase, an enzyme HIV needs to replicate, thereby reducing viral load and increasing CD4 cell counts.
Symfi is taken once daily on an empty stomach, preferably at bedtime to reduce central nervous system side effects such as dizziness and vivid dreams. Common side effects include rash, headache, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Patients should be monitored for hepatotoxicity, psychiatric symptoms, and bone mineral density changes. Not recommended during pregnancy; alternative regimens should be used. Resistance testing is recommended before initiating therapy.
