Synjardy is indicated for improving blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is typically prescribed as an adjunct to diet and exercise when single-agent therapy is not providing adequate glycemic control.
Synjardy combines two complementary mechanisms: empagliflozin blocks sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) in the kidneys, causing increased glucose excretion through urine; metformin decreases hepatic glucose production and improves insulin sensitivity in the body's tissues.
Synjardy is not indicated for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. It carries boxed warnings regarding lactic acidosis risk (from metformin) and should not be used in patients with severe kidney impairment. Common side effects may include urinary and genital infections, gastrointestinal symptoms, and increased urination. As with all diabetes medications, blood sugar should be monitored regularly.
