Tacalcitol is indicated for the topical treatment of plaque psoriasis (psoriasis vulgaris). It may be used alone or in combination with other psoriasis treatments as directed by a healthcare provider.

As a vitamin D3 analog, tacalcitol binds to vitamin D receptors in skin cells. This action helps normalize the abnormal proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes, reducing the thick, scaly plaques characteristic of psoriasis.

Tacalcitol is for external use only and should not be applied to the face. Patients should avoid excessive sun exposure on treated areas. Calcium levels are generally not affected with topical use, but caution is needed in patients with disorders of calcium metabolism. Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
