Tazicef is used to treat serious infections including lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, intra-abdominal infections, bacterial meningitis, and septicemia. It is particularly useful for hospital-acquired infections and those caused by gram-negative bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Tazicef contains ceftazidime, a beta-lactam antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), disrupting the synthesis of the peptidoglycan layer in the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell death. It is effective against many gram-negative bacteria and some gram-positive bacteria.

Tazicef is administered intravenously or intramuscularly by healthcare professionals. Common side effects may include gastrointestinal symptoms, rash, and local injection site reactions. As with other antibiotics, it should be used only when a bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected to avoid antibiotic resistance. Patients with penicillin allergies should use caution, as cross-reactivity is possible. Dose adjustments may be needed for patients with kidney impairment.
