Tegaserod is primarily indicated for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in women under 65 years of age, and for chronic idiopathic constipation in adults.

As a selective 5-HT4 receptor agonist, tegaserod stimulates serotonin receptors in the gastrointestinal tract, enhancing gastric emptying, increasing intestinal motility, and promoting intestinal fluid secretion to facilitate bowel movements.

This medication was withdrawn from the US market in 2007 due to cardiovascular safety concerns. It should not be used in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, ischemic heart disease, or stroke. Treatment is typically limited to 4-6 weeks for IBS-C. Common side effects include headache, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
