Irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in adults, and hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis.
Tenapanor locally inhibits NHE3, a sodium transporter on the apical surface of the small intestine and colon. This reduces sodium absorption, causing sodium to remain in the intestinal lumen where it draws water, softening stool and improving bowel movements. For phosphate control, it also reduces phosphate absorption from the diet.
Tenapanor acts locally in the gastrointestinal tract with minimal systemic absorption. Common side effects include diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. Patients should stay adequately hydrated during treatment. Dosing and duration should follow prescribing information, and the medication should be used under medical supervision.
