Treatment of HIV-1 infection (in combination with other antiretroviral drugs) and chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in adults and pediatric patients.
As a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor, tenofovir blocks the reverse transcriptase enzyme that HIV and HBV need to replicate, thereby reducing viral load.
May cause renal toxicity and decreased bone mineral density; regular monitoring of kidney function is recommended. Should not be used as monotherapy for HIV. Patients should be counseled on adherence to prevent drug resistance.
