Tesamorelin is indicated for the reduction of excess visceral abdominal fat (VAT) in HIV-infected patients with lipodystrophy. This condition commonly occurs as a complication of antiretroviral therapy and is characterized by disproportionate fat accumulation in the abdominal region.

Tesamorelin is a synthetic analog of growth hormone-releasing factor (GHRF/GHRH). It binds to and stimulates GRF receptors in the pituitary gland with potency similar to endogenous GHRF, triggering the release of growth hormone. This leads to increased lipolysis (fat breakdown) in visceral adipose tissue.

Tesamorelin is administered as a daily subcutaneous injection. Common side effects include injection site reactions, arthralgia, and elevated blood glucose levels. It should not be used in patients with active malignancy, pituitary tumors, or during pregnancy. Treatment response should be monitored, and therapy may be discontinued if no improvement is observed after 6 months.
