Thalitone is primarily used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) and edema associated with conditions such as heart failure, kidney disorders, or liver cirrhosis. It may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive medications.
Thalitone works by inhibiting sodium reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubules of the kidneys. This causes increased excretion of sodium, water, potassium, and hydrogen ions, reducing fluid volume in the body and decreasing blood pressure.
Thalitone may cause electrolyte imbalances (particularly low potassium), increased urination, and photosensitivity. Patients should have blood pressure and electrolytes monitored regularly. It may interact with lithium, digoxin, and other medications affecting electrolyte balance. Alcohol and sun exposure should be used with caution while taking this medication.
