Timoptic is primarily indicated for reducing elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma, pseudoexfoliative glaucoma, or ocular hypertension. It may be used alone or in combination with other glaucoma medications.

Timoptic contains timolol maleate, a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor blocker. When applied topically to the eye, it reduces the production of aqueous humor (the clear fluid inside the eye), thereby lowering intraocular pressure.

As a beta-blocker, Timoptic may cause systemic side effects including bradycardia, hypotension, bronchospasm, and exacerbation of heart failure. It is contraindicated in patients with asthma, severe COPD, certain cardiac conditions, and sinus bradycardia. Patients should remove soft contact lenses before application and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting. The medication should be used exactly as prescribed and regular eye pressure monitoring is important.
