Tivicay is used to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and children weighing at least 10 kg, in combination with other antiretroviral agents. It is not a cure for HIV but helps manage the condition by reducing viral load and supporting immune function.

Tivicay contains dolutegravir, an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) that blocks the HIV integrase enzyme. By inhibiting this enzyme, the medication prevents the virus from inserting its genetic material into the DNA of healthy immune cells, thereby slowing HIV replication.

Tivicay may cause serious side effects including liver problems and allergic reactions. It should not be used with dofetilide or pilsicainide. Patients should inform their doctor about liver conditions, kidney issues, or if pregnant or planning to become pregnant. The medication should be taken as prescribed, and patients should not stop treatment without medical advice.
