Primarily prescribed for muscle spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, stroke, and other neurological disorders. Also used off-label for tension headaches and insomnia in some cases.
Acts as an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist in the central nervous system, reducing the activity of certain nerve signals from the spinal cord that control muscle tone, thereby decreasing muscle stiffness and spasms.
May cause drowsiness, dizziness, and low blood pressure. Avoid alcohol as it can increase side effects. Should not be stopped abruptly after prolonged use as this may cause withdrawal symptoms or rebound hypertension. Patients with liver disease should use with caution.
