Tolak is used to treat actinic keratosis (also called solar keratosis), which are rough, scaly patches of skin caused by cumulative sun exposure. These lesions are considered precancerous and can develop into squamous cell carcinoma if left untreated.
Fluorouracil, the active ingredient in Tolak, is a chemotherapy agent that interferes with DNA synthesis in rapidly dividing cells. When applied topically to areas with precancerous cells, it selectively targets and destroys these abnormal cells while having less effect on normal skin cells.
Tolak is for external use only on the skin. Common side effects include skin redness, irritation, burning, and peeling in treated areas. The medication may make treated areas more sensitive to sunlight, so sun exposure should be avoided during treatment. Treatment duration is typically 2-4 weeks as directed by a physician. Patients should not apply this medication to open wounds, eyes, or mucous membranes.
