Tradjenta is indicated to improve glycemic control in adults with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. It may be used as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic medications such as metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin. It is not indicated for use in Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Tradjenta works by inhibiting the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4), which breaks down incretin hormones. By preventing this breakdown, it increases levels of GLP-1 and GIP, hormones that stimulate insulin release and suppress glucagon in a glucose-dependent manner, thereby lowering blood sugar levels.
Common side effects may include upper respiratory tract infections, nasopharyngitis, and headache. Patients should be aware of potential side effects including joint pain and skin reactions. As with all diabetes medications, blood sugar should be monitored regularly. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of all medications and supplements they are taking before starting Tradjenta.
