Treanda is FDA-approved for the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma that has progressed during or within six months of treatment with rituximab or a rituximab-containing regimen. It may also be used off-label for other hematologic malignancies as determined by an oncologist.
As an alkylating agent, Treanda (bendamustine) works by binding to DNA strands and causing cross-linking, which prevents the DNA from unwinding and replicating. This interference with DNA function triggers programmed cell death (apoptosis) in both cancer cells and some healthy cells, though cancer cells are generally more susceptible.
Common side effects include low blood cell counts, nausea, fatigue, and fever. Patients should be monitored for infusion reactions, which may occur during or shortly after administration. Treanda may cause tumor lysis syndrome and should be used with caution in patients with compromised bone marrow function. Effective contraception is recommended during treatment as it may cause harm to a developing fetus.
