Published: July 26, 2026Updated: August 25, 2026

Trelegy Ellipta is a triple-combination inhaled medication used for the maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma in patients requiring multiple therapies. It combines three active ingredients—an inhaled corticosteroid (fluticasone furoate), a long-acting muscarinic antagonist (umeclidinium), and a long-acting beta2-agonist (vilanterol)—to reduce inflammation, relax airway muscles, and improve breathing. This once-daily inhaler is typically prescribed when single-agent or dual-therapy inhalers have not adequately controlled symptoms.

Quick summary

Trelegy is indicated for the maintenance treatment of COPD (including chronic bronchitis and emphysema) and as a once-daily asthma maintenance treatment in patients 18 years and older who require an inhaled corticosteroid, a long-acting muscarinic antagonist, and a long-acting beta2-agonist.

Trelegy combines three mechanisms: fluticasone furoate reduces airway inflammation, umeclidinium blocks muscarinic receptors to prevent airway constriction, and vilanterol stimulates beta2-receptors to relax bronchial smooth muscle, resulting in improved airflow and symptom relief.

Trelegy is not for acute bronchospasm or sudden breathing problems; patients should carry a rescue inhaler. Common side effects include oral thrush, hoarseness, headache, and upper respiratory infections. It should not be used with other LABAs or LAMAs to avoid excess anticholinergic or bronchodilator effects. Patients should rinse their mouth after each use to reduce the risk of oral candidiasis.
