Tremfya is FDA-approved for the treatment of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults who are candidates for systemic therapy or phototherapy, as well as for active psoriatic arthritis. It may be used alone or in combination with other medications.
Tremfya is a monoclonal antibody that specifically binds to the p19 subunit of interleukin-23 (IL-23), blocking its interaction with immune cells. By inhibiting IL-23, it reduces the inflammatory cascade that contributes to the symptoms of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.
Tremfya is administered by subcutaneous injection, typically at weeks 0 and 4, then every 8 weeks thereafter. As a biologic, it suppresses parts of the immune system, increasing the risk of infections. Patients should be screened for tuberculosis before starting treatment and should not receive live vaccines while on therapy. Common side effects may include upper respiratory infections, headache, and injection site reactions.
