Treprostinil is FDA-approved for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) to improve exercise capacity and symptoms. It may also be used for other forms of pulmonary hypertension as determined by a healthcare provider.
Treprostinil is a prostacyclin analog that causes direct vasodilation of pulmonary and systemic arterial vascular beds, reducing elevated blood pressure in the lungs. It also inhibits platelet aggregation, which helps prevent blood clot formation.
Treprostinil is administered via subcutaneous infusion, intravenous infusion, or inhalation. Common side effects include infusion site pain (with subcutaneous use), headache, diarrhea, nausea, jaw pain, and flushing. Treatment should not be stopped abruptly as this may cause worsening of pulmonary hypertension. Patients should be monitored for hypotension and bleeding risk.
