Tri-Luma is FDA-approved for the short-term treatment of moderate to severe melasma, particularly when accompanied by signs of inflammation. It is indicated for use on the face and may be prescribed when other treatments have been ineffective.

Tri-Luma combines three complementary agents: a corticosteroid reduces inflammation and suppresses melanin production, a hydroquinone inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase to decrease melanin synthesis, and a retinoid helps increase skin cell turnover to promote even skin tone.

Tri-Luma should only be used under medical supervision as prolonged use of topical corticosteroids may cause skin thinning. It is not recommended during pregnancy and should be used with caution in patients with sensitive skin. Sun exposure should be minimized during treatment as UV light can worsen melasma.
