Trijardy is indicated for use in adults with type 2 diabetes to improve glycemic control when diet and exercise alone, or with other diabetes medications, have not provided sufficient blood sugar control.
Trijardy combines three mechanisms: empagliflozin (an SGLT2 inhibitor) helps the kidneys remove excess glucose through urine; linagliptin (a DPP-4 inhibitor) increases insulin release after meals and reduces glucose production; and metformin (a biguanide) decreases glucose production in the liver and improves the body's insulin sensitivity.
Trijardy is not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. It carries a boxed warning for lactic acidosis risk with metformin. Common side effects may include urinary tract infections, genital yeast infections, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Patients should stay hydrated and monitor for signs of infection. Always follow prescribing physician's instructions regarding diet and lifestyle changes.
