Primarily used to treat pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's disease) in dogs. May also be used in cats and occasionally in humans for adrenal disorders in specialized settings.

Inhibits 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, an enzyme essential for the synthesis of cortisol, aldosterone, and androgens in the adrenal cortex. By blocking this enzyme, trilostane reduces excessive hormone production characteristic of Cushing's syndrome.

Requires monitoring of electrolytes and adrenal function during treatment. Contraindicated in animals with primary adrenal insufficiency. Should not be used in pregnant animals. Regular veterinary monitoring is essential to adjust dosage and assess treatment efficacy. May cause mild GI upset initially. Must be distinguished from adrenal-dependent Cushing's before initiating therapy.
