Triumeq is indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 40 kg. It is used as part of a complete antiretroviral regimen for patients who have been assessed and meet clinical prescribing criteria. HLA-B*5701 testing is required before initiation due to abacavir hypersensitivity risk.

Triumeq contains three active ingredients: dolutegravir (an integrase strand transfer inhibitor) and two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (abacavir and lamivudine). Dolutegravir blocks HIV integrase, preventing viral DNA from integrating into host cell DNA. Abacavir and lamivudine inhibit reverse transcriptase, blocking the conversion of viral RNA to DNA.

Triumeq carries a boxed warning for serious hypersensitivity reactions associated with abacavir. Patients must be screened for HLA-B*5701 before starting therapy. It should not be used in patients with hepatitis B co-infection unless appropriate hepatitis B treatment is added. Common side effects may include headache, fatigue, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Medication should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.
