Used to produce local numbness of the skin prior to minor surgical or cosmetic procedures, including needle insertions, laser treatments, wart removal, and other superficial dermatological procedures. May also be used for pain relief of minor skin irritations.
Contains prilocaine, an amide-type local anesthetic that blocks sodium channels in nerve fibers, preventing the generation and transmission of nerve impulses. This results in temporary loss of sensation in the area where the medication is applied to the skin.
For external use only on intact skin. Avoid application near eyes, nose, mouth, or open wounds. Use with caution in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency or methemoglobinemia, as rare cases of methemoglobinemia have been reported. Do not use on large areas of skin, under airtight dressings, or for prolonged periods, especially in infants or young children. Allergic reactions to amide-type anesthetics are uncommon but possible.
