Trulance is FDA-approved for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in adults. It is not indicated for use in children.

Trulance (plecanatide) is a guanylate cyclase-C agonist that binds to receptors in the intestinal lining, mimicking the action of the natural hormone guanylin. This binding increases chloride and bicarbonate secretion into the intestinal lumen, which draws in water and promotes bowel movements.

Trulance should not be used in patients with known or suspected mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction. The most common side effects include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and bloating. It is contraindicated in patients younger than 6 years old due to the risk of severe dehydration. Patients should discontinue use and seek medical attention if severe diarrhea occurs.
