Truvada is indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and children weighing at least 17 kg, used in combination with other antiretroviral agents. It is also approved for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to reduce the risk of HIV-1 infection in high-risk individuals who are HIV-negative.
Truvada contains two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that work by interfering with the viral enzyme reverse transcriptase, which HIV needs to replicate. By blocking this enzyme, the medication helps reduce the viral load and allows the immune system to function more effectively.
Truvada is not a cure for HIV/AIDS. For PrEP use, it must be taken consistently as prescribed and combined with other prevention methods like condoms. Regular monitoring of kidney function and bone density may be recommended. Individuals must be confirmed HIV-negative before starting PrEP. Common side effects may include nausea, headache, and fatigue.
