Tubersol is used for tuberculin skin testing to detect latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). It is indicated for screening individuals with potential TB exposure, healthcare workers, close contacts of TB patients, immigrants from TB-endemic regions, and persons with conditions that increase TB risk such as HIV or diabetes.
Tubersol contains purified protein derivative (PPD) derived from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. When injected intradermally, it triggers a delayed-type hypersensitivity immune response in individuals previously sensitized to TB antigens. A positive reaction (induration) indicates prior TB infection or exposure, requiring further clinical evaluation.
Tubersol is for diagnostic use only, not treatment. A positive skin test does not distinguish between latent and active TB infection—additional evaluation (such as chest X-ray and symptom assessment) is required. False negatives can occur in immunocompromised patients, recent TB exposure, or in very young children. The test should be administered and read by trained healthcare professionals within 48-72 hours.
