Tzield is indicated to delay the onset of Stage 3 Type 1 Diabetes (clinical disease) in adults and pediatric patients 8 years of age and older who currently have Stage 2 Type 1 Diabetes (evidence of autoimmunity without hyperglycemia). It is the first therapy approved specifically for this purpose.

Tzield contains teplizumab, an anti-CD3 monoclonal antibody that binds to T cells and modulates the immune response. It is believed to work by deactivating the T cells that mistakenly attack and destroy insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, thereby delaying the progression to clinical diabetes.

Tzield is administered as an intravenous infusion over 30 minutes daily for 14 consecutive days. Common side effects include cytokine release syndrome, lymphopenia, rash, fever, headache, and nausea. Patients should be monitored for infusion reactions and signs of infection during treatment. A single treatment course provides the delaying benefit; retreatment safety and efficacy have not been established.
