Ulesfia is indicated for the topical treatment of head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) infestation in adults and children 6 months of age and older.
The exact mechanism of action is not fully established. Benzyl alcohol is believed to work as a pediculicide by suffocating the lice, though it does not have significant ovicidal (egg-killing) activity. A second treatment is often recommended 7 days after the initial application to target any newly hatched lice.
Ulesfia is for topical use only and should not be ingested. It should be applied to dry hair and scalp, left on for 10 minutes, then rinsed with water. Common side effects may include skin irritation, itching, or redness at the application site. Care should be taken to avoid contact with eyes. The medication is available by prescription only.
