Emergency contraception to prevent unintended pregnancy following unprotected intercourse, contraceptive failure (e.g., condom breakage, missed birth control pills), or sexual assault. Not intended for use as a regular contraceptive.
As a selective progesterone receptor modulator, ulipristal binds to progesterone receptors and inhibits or delays ovulation by preventing the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge necessary for follicular rupture. It may also alter the endometrium, potentially affecting implantation.
Should be taken as soon as possible within 120 hours of unprotected intercourse for maximum efficacy. Not recommended for use during existing pregnancy or in individuals with severe asthma. Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Effectiveness may be reduced with repeated use within the same menstrual cycle. Commonly reported side effects include headache, nausea, and abdominal pain.
