Ultomiris is FDA-approved for the treatment of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) in adults who are anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody positive, and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) in adults who are anti-aquaporin-4 seropositive.
Ultomiris is a humanized monoclonal antibody that binds specifically to the C5 protein of the complement system, preventing its cleavage into C5a and C5b. This inhibition blocks the formation of the membrane attack complex (MAC), which is responsible for destroying red blood cells in conditions like PNH and damaging cells in other complement-mediated diseases.
Ultomiris is administered via intravenous infusion, typically every 8 weeks after an initial loading dose. Patients should be monitored for serious infections, particularly meningococcal infections, and may require vaccinations before starting treatment. Common side effects include upper respiratory infections, headaches, and nausea. This medication should only be prescribed by healthcare providers experienced in managing the specific conditions it treats.
