Ultracet is indicated for the short-term (typically 5 days or less) management of acute pain that is severe enough to require an opioid analgesic, when other non-opioid pain relievers are not adequate. It is commonly prescribed for conditions such as postoperative pain, dental procedures, and musculoskeletal injuries.
Ultracet combines two pain-relieving agents. Tramadol works by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and also affects neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine, modifying pain perception. Acetaminophen (paracetamol) provides additional analgesic and fever-reducing effects through its own mechanism, likely involving inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis in the central nervous system.
Ultracet carries risks associated with opioid use including potential for dependence, tolerance, respiratory depression, and misuse. The acetaminophen component poses a risk of liver damage, particularly with high doses or alcohol use. It should not be used in patients with severe respiratory depression, uncontrolled epilepsy, or those taking MAO inhibitors. Due to risks, it is typically reserved for situations when alternative pain treatments are inadequate.
