Published: July 26, 2026Updated: August 25, 2026

Uplizna (inebilizumab) is a prescription monoclonal antibody medication designed to reduce the frequency of attacks in adults with Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD) who test positive for anti-aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibodies. It works by targeting and depleting CD19-positive B cells, which play a key role in the inflammatory process that damages the optic nerves and spinal cord in NMOSD.

Quick summary

Uplizna is a B-cell depleting therapy used to treat adults with NMOSD, a rare autoimmune condition affecting the optic nerves and spinal cord.

Uplizna is FDA-approved for the treatment of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) in adult patients who are seropositive for anti-aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibodies. NMOSD is a rare autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks the optic nerves and spinal cord, causing vision loss, weakness, numbness, and paralysis.

Uplizna is a CD19-directed cytolytic antibody that binds to CD19, a protein found on the surface of B cells. By binding to CD19, it causes depletion of B cells through antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity and other mechanisms, thereby reducing the autoimmune attack on the central nervous system characteristic of NMOSD.

Uplizna is administered as an intravenous infusion by a healthcare provider. Common side effects include urinary tract infection, infusion reactions, and fatigue. Serious risks include serious infections, potential for hypogammaglobulinemia, and infusion reactions. Patients should be monitored for infections during and after treatment. Live vaccines should be avoided during treatment.
