Uptravi is indicated for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (WHO Group 1) to improve exercise capacity, delay disease progression, and reduce the need for hospitalization. It may be used alone or in combination with other PAH medications.

Uptravi contains the active ingredient selexipag, which is a prostacyclin receptor agonist. It works by activating prostacyclin receptors in the pulmonary arteries, causing relaxation of the blood vessels and reducing the pressure in the lungs. This makes it easier for the heart to pump blood through the lungs.

Uptravi is typically started at a low dose and gradually increased to reduce side effects such as headache, diarrhea, jaw pain, and nausea. It should not be stopped abruptly. Common side effects include headache, diarrhea, nausea, jaw pain, muscle pain, and vomiting. Patients should inform their doctor about all medications they are taking, as drug interactions may occur.
